Abdul Latif Salazar. Britain 2004. 1h20m. BETA SP. English and Persian with
English narration and some subtitles. 12A. Cast: Abol Reza Kermani, Mitra Hajjar,
Dariush Arjmand, Ghorban Nadja.
This
film explores the life and impact of the greatest spiritual and
legal philosopher in Islamic history. Examining his existential
crisis of faith that arose from his rejection of formal book based
learning in favour of direct experience, it reveals profound parallels
with our own times. Ghazali became known as the Proof of Islam,
and his path of love and spiritual excellence overcame the pitfalls
of the religious fanaticism of his day. As a result of his efforts,
Sufism was integrated into the wider body of Islamic teachings.
But as early 20th century Muslim reformers largely abandoned his
path, this gave rise to the more literalist and less tolerant schools
of thought.
The film
will be introduced by Dr Neil Douglas-Klotz, internationally-known
scholar of religious studies and psychology, and a senior teacher
of the Sufi Ruhaniat International through which he has led spiritually
rooted peace-seeking journeys to Russia, Eastern Europe, Syria,
Jordan, and Israel.

1. Taneen
Sufi Music Ensemble's unique and original music -- arising
through prayer, meditation, and spiritual practice and rooted in
the Sufi musical tradition in its intent and inspiration -- is
a celebration of the heart's longing to unite with the Beloved.
Taneen, translated from the Persian as Divine Melody, transports
their audience to a state of inner peace while they interweave
ecstatic chant with the love poetry of both ancient and contemporary
Sufi masters, sung in English and recited in the original and
beautifully melodic Persian. Formed as an ensemble in 1996 under
the guidance of Muslim Sufi masters Shah Nazar Seyed Ali Kianfar
and Seyedeh Nahid Angha, founders of the International Association
of Sufism, Taneen members hail from the San Francisco Bay Area
and have performed at the Nobel
Peace Institute, the Parliament of World's Religions, the United
Nations 50th Anniversary celebration, and other venues and events
dedicated to peace-building, human rights, and interfaith understanding;

4. Sufi Chants from the International Sufi School of Sheikh Ahmadou
Bamba.
Khidmatul Khadim, The
International Sufi School of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba is a School of
Peace and Service established worldwide.
In July 2005, the School held an
International Exhibition in London entitled Nonviolence: A Choice‚.
The exhibition was the product of deep research on the lives of men of peace
from different eras, different countries, different cultures and religions.
The research showed that beyond all differences, the common element remains
the human being. Indeed peace starts within the human being himself, deep in
his heart. One of the essential practices of our School is Zikrullah, for
it is through the remembrance of God that the heart finds peace
and tranquility. The School has hence produced three CDs of Zikrullah to illustrate
the different stages which the heart goes through in its way towards
the attainment of peace. The three CDs are thus entitled The
Liberated Heart, The Appeased Heart‚ and The
Ecstatic Heart.
On the beat of the djembe, the International
Sufi School will perform Zikrullah on the exhilarating West African mystical
melodies. Verily, the remembrance of the Lord liberates and appeases the heart
until it is led into ecstasy.
